Gear transmission is one of the most basic forms of mechanical transmission. It is characterized by accurate, reliable, high-efficiency transmission, and a wide range of transmission power and speed. The heavy duty helical gear transmission can be divided according to working conditions, and can be divided into: open gear transmission, semi-open gear transmission and closed gear transmission.

The gears of the open gear transmission are completely exposed to the outside, so the debris is easy to invade, the lubrication is poor, and the tooth surface is easy to wear, which is usually used for low-speed transmission.

The semi-open gear transmission is equipped with simple protection devices, and the working conditions have been improved to some extent.

The gear of the closed transmission is installed in the closed box, which has the best lubrication and protection conditions, and is often used in important occasion.

The failure modes of heavy gear transmission mainly occur in gear teeth. The common failure modes include: gear teeth broken, tooth surface wear, tooth surface pitting, tooth surface gluing, and plastic deformation.


Gear teeth broken: In closed transmission, when the tooth surface of the gear is hard, it is easy to break the toothr. In addition, the gear may break when the gear is suddenly overloaded. Measures to improve the gear's anti-breaking ability include: increasing the radius of the root transition radius and eliminating machining tool marks; increasing the rigidity of the shaft and support; using reasonable heat treatment method to make the tooth core sufficiently tough; carrying out surface strengthening treatment such as shot peening and rolling.


Tooth surface wear: Tooth surface wear is one of the main failure modes of starting gear transmission. Using to closed gear transmission is the most effective way to avoid tooth surface wear.

Tooth surface pitting: Tooth surface pitting is the main failure form of closed gear transmission. It is more likely to occur on the soft tooth surfaces. Measures to improve the pitting resistance of the tooth surface include: increasing the hardness of the gear material, and adding lubricating oil between the meshing gear teeth can reduce friction and slow down pitting.


Tooth surface gluing: For high-speed and heavy-duty gear transmission, tooth surface gluing is prone to occur. In addition, heavy gear transmission with low speed and heavy load will also cause tooth surface gluing failure and cold gluing. Measures to improve the gluing ability: increase the hardness of the tooth surface and reduce the roughness of the tooth surface. Strengthen lubrication measures, such as using the lubricating oil with high anti-gluing ability, adding additives to lubricating oil, etc.


Plastic deformation: Plastic deformation generally occurs on tooth surfaces with low hardness, but under heavy load, it also appears on gears with high hardness. Measures to improve the gear's ability to resist plastic deformation: increase the hardness of the gear tooth surface; use high viscosity or lubricating oil with extreme pressure additives.


According to the failure form of gear transmission, the basic requirements for the material properties of gears are that the tooth surface is hard and the tooth center is tough. According to the above requirements, the materials often used in gear designing: forged steel, cast steel, cast iron and metallic materials. Among them, forged steel is the most commonly used material in gear design. Thecast steel is commonly used for large gears. The cast iron plant is used in situations where the operation is stable, the speed is low, and the power is not large.

The non-metallic gears can reduce noise, which is often used in the situation of high speed, light load and low progress.


When designing the structure of the gear, we must comprehensively consider factors such as the gear's geometric size, blank, material, processing technology, use requirements, and economical factors. Usually, the appropriate structural form is selected according to the diameter of the gear, and then the structural design is completed based on empirical data.

In addition, the structural design of the gear must also consider the coupling of the gear to the shaft. Generally speaking, gears and shafts can be connected with a single key; however, when the speed of the gear is high, splines or double keys should be used; for gears sliding along the shaft, splines or double guides can be used. Heat Treatment of Heavy Gears

For forged steel materials, normalizing or quenching and tempering are usually adoptd, and then tooth cutting is carried out. However, when gears are used in important occasions, they are usually cut first, and then surface hardened (such as surface hardening, carburizing, nitriding, etc.), and then finishing. For cast steel materials, annealing and normalization are often used, and quenching and tempering is performed if necessary.
